Acknowledging Country No. 3, 2010, ink and bleach on paper, 99cm x 33cm

And another set of works, testing out the potential of watercolours to offer a different take, a gentler one.

Never having worked with watercolour before, I was keen to utilise the vibrant colour pallet and felt that perhaps my experience working with ink would help inform my techniques. I had played with watercolour in a tutorial class.
Although my trials met with some success - I mainly realised the importance of good quality watercolour paints, as the ones I used in these works were at the cheaper end of the range and they do not result in the same transparent glow of the ones available for my use in class. If nothing else though - I take this away for future reference.

watercolour study 1, 2010, watercolour, tea and wax on paper, 76.5cm x 27.5cm
I actually also used tea on this one, It seems to offer the bright lightness that I like so. The muddiness in the darkest sections - the washes turned out to be far to opaque, I do feel the low quality of watercolours used catalysed this.

watercolour study 2, 2010, watercolour, acrylic, tea and ink on paper, 76.5cm x 27.5cm
This one could really become something - would work well as an illustration or info poster - really an experiment, the composition is faulty and awkward.

watercolour study 3, 2010, graphite, masking tape and watercolour on paper, 76.5cm x 27.5 cm
I actually really enjoy this piece, as seen on my 'current works' page - I have utilised this technique of up-cycling the masking forms from prior works in the final resolution of another. Working with masks suggestive of the masking out and the graphite sections on this work (later works this formed in the scratching back - or underscoring and re-shaping or overwriting with bleach and eraser) This is my little piece of Deleuzean thinking in action.

2009 works

- these formed part of an installation work, each is approximately 270cm x 90cm and the themes were again very personal - a re-visioning of the power plays involved in communal or social constructions of childhood sexualisation and sexual abuse. A wondering about the possible ways to 'take back' power through moving beyond or away from a position of victim or 'survivor' to a position of strength and honour.
